A good one along with Chrondritin is Glucosomine. It's AWESOME for joint soreness and pain. They put them together. You have to allow about a month before you'll see a difference. Sam's club has them for probably the cheapest. So get a big bottle and finish the entire thing before you make a decision if it's working. Good luck!!
References :
Well when I had random arthiritis a while ago my doctor put me on this medication called Naprosyn that was an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, but you probably know that if you have arthiritis) but many OTC pain relievers like Tylenol and I think Motrin contain NSAIDs (and probably aleve and advil too, but I don't take those and you'll have to check those out for yourself). I think they make a Tylenol specifically for arthiritis, but they advised me not to use it because I was so young.

I hope that helped. This website I have here can probably help you too.
References :
http://www.arthritis.org/conditions/DrugGuide/default.asp

First. let's get some things straight.

There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, most of which cannot be prevented and most of which, as well, have no real connection to food.

Arthritis pain meds are not about pain relief. They are among a number of methods used to manage pain, manage to the extent that a patient can function reasonably well, on a routine basis.

Chondroitin is not not a new supplement, and it's not a joint pain reliever. It's a supplement that can help to restore cartilage, and thus reduce pain to some extent. But along with glucosamine and, osteo-byflex and every other supplement that you have heard described as preventing or treating arthritis, it works only if the damage is from osteoarthritis.

All pain meds will raise your blood pressure, but so does pain. Increased levels of pain will increase your blood pressure even more. It's a trade off, yes, but there are also other things that you can do to reduce your BP.

Talk with your doctor about your pain. And if you haven't already seen one, ask for a referral to a rheumatologist. That's a doctor who specializes in all things arthritic.
References :
I have multiple types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis.

To a large extent you will not be able to reduce the deformity caused by your arthritic hands unless you were to have joints replacements performed.

Glucosamine tablets or capsules contain sodium so you would have to make sure you do not exceed the recommended dose as more fluid retention will cause further swelling and discomfort. Also people with cardiac conditions and high blood pressure would need to check with their doctors first before taking them to make sure it is ok for them.

Scientific research has proven that there are foods that promote inflammation and therefore we should eat less of them. These tend to be processed 'foods' - cakes, biscuits, white breads and also animal fats.

There are also foods that help to reduce inflammation - we should eat more of these foods. This group includes vegetables fats (good omega 3 oils). Natural grains like brown rice, basmati rice, pulses, almonds, walnuts and dates all help to reduce inflammation.

Eat more fruits and vegetables especially the watery ones like citrus fruits, zucchinis, bok choy.

Eat fish 3 to 5 times a week.

Use olive for cooking and in salads; also flaxseed oil.

Eat very little meat, poultry, cheese, butter. Beef is the best source for meat. Then lamb and then pork.

Eat less; alot of people overeat.

Don't forget to drink water. Alcohol and coffee also promotes inflammation in the body.

This diet plan is also beneficial for people with diabetes, neurological conditions, some cancers, heart conditions, everyone really.
References :
Unfortunately, without knowing more details about the specific cause of your arthritis it is difficult to provide much advise. Modern treatments can slow or sometimes halt the progression of joint damage from some types of arthritis, but effective treatments tend to be fairly expensive.

At the same time, there are free or reduced cost clinics for patients with lower income and no insurance, and indigent drug plans from the major pharmaceutical companies that will allow you to get free drugs depending on your financial situation.

Do yourself a favor and check with your local hospital on where to find an indigent care clinic: the longer you wait, the more damage your joints will sustain.
References :
Pharmacist.

Zostrix works well and no smell but if you have never used a capsicum rub before, buy the regular strength. And take your bath before using as the hot water will increase the heat of it. And Zostrix is very expensive (20 bucks for max strength) but it works so well you won't need much or need to reapply more than twice a day unless you are really in a bad way.
References :
Try looking up some accupressure points on the web or in the library - they are pressure points (there are many of them on the body), where you hold your finger or thumb down quite hard on a particular spot for pain relief. The sites may also describe ways to relax a muscle.
It's all completely non-smelly and works unless there is a serious underlying problem.
There will be a description of which areas they work for and you will know when you have the right spot because it hurts!
